Draughts looks simple until one rule changes the entire turn. Board size, starting squares, mandatory captures, multi-jumps, backward capture, and king movement vary by ruleset, so read the live rules before applying habits from another version.

Identify the exact ruleset

Check board dimensions, move direction, capture priority, continuation of jumps, promotion timing, and how kings move. A legal move in one draughts tradition may be illegal in another.

Map the full capture sequence

Because captures may be compulsory, inspect every piece before choosing. Calculate where a multi-jump ends and whether the landing square allows an immediate reply.

• Scan both diagonals
• Count forced jumps
• Protect the back rank
• Watch promotion lanes

Trade for position, not just piece count

An exchange can open a king route, remove a blocker, or force an unfavorable tempo. After a game, revisit the first move where mobility narrowed rather than reviewing only the final capture.

Rule awareness comes first; strategy only works after you know which moves the board permits.
